Creating a dynamic interaction between the worlds of academia and business is of great value to both Karolinska Institutet and to society as a whole. In order to facilitate the journey from early research idea to commercial product, Karolinska Institutet has created a comprehensive innovation system. Researchers are given professional support to help develop good ideas into successful Life Science companies. Karolinska Institutet Innovations AB (KIAB) represents the initial commercialization stage and lies at the very heart of this unique innovation system.

KIAB receives and evaluates ideas from researchers at Karolinska Institutet and other Nordic universities. If the idea is considered to be commercially interesting, KIAB offers assistance with patenting and licensing as well as commercial negotiations and project management. Every year up to 100 projects are screened by experienced expert teams. To date KIAB has reviewed more than 1000 academic ideas, started over 40 companies and concluded over 30 license agreements.
In close cooperation with Karolinska Institutet Science Park AB, KIAB runs incubators (Starthus) where start-up companies receive support throughout the entire development process, from the very early start-up phase through to commercial development and continued growth.
