Licensing Opportunities
KIAB drives, develops and finances projects under its own management. After the initial development phase, depending on the type of invention, the idea is either packaged as a direct licensing opportunity for an industrial buyer or it is turned into a spin-out company.
To date KIAB has started over 40 companies and concluded more than 30 license agreements.

Molecular tool for dsRNA amplification
The methodology for the analyses and handling of RNA in its natural duplex form is limited. This invention describes a two-step ligation method for enzymatic joining of dsRNA-adapters to any dsRNA molecule in its duplex form without a need for prior sequence or termini information. The method is specific for dsRNA and can be applied to cellular RNA. The new method can ligate various adapters to label, map or amplify dsRNA sequences. Importantly, the method requires no prior knowledge of the sequence of the dsRNA substrate.

A novel target for treatment of Cachexia and Anorexia Nervosa
Monomeric TRAP is an interesting target for therapy in cachexia and anorexia nervosa or other diseases characterized by massive loss of fat tissue. It would be beneficial to increase formation of new fat cells in these conditions. The present invention relates to a potential treatment of the cachexia conditions either with monomeric TRAP or derivates thereof in order to increase the fat mass and thereby ameliorate the conditions.

mPGE Synthase 1: Novel enzyme constitutes a highly selective target for new therapies for inflammation
This invention provides screening assays for highly selective molecules able to inhibit PGE synthase activity. The screens will be useful for finding selective inhibitors that will become new treatments for inflammation, pain, cancer, modulating apoptosis, and treating Alzheimer’s disease with obvious advantages over COX-2 inhibitors.

The Mitopark mouse: First animal model showing the slow progressive degeneration of dopamine neurons seen in Parkinson's disease
The Mitopark mouse is a valuable asset to researchers, biomedical and drug companies alike that strive to test new drugs for the treatment of PD. It would allow testing for preventive therapies, as well as for drugs that might stop or slow the neurodegenerative process. Since the pathogenic pathway is relatively well understood in the Mitopark mouse, efforts can be made to target this process directly.

New Human Virus: Human bocavirus
Human bocavirus is a newly identified virus in the parvovirus family. A rapidly increasing number of reports support an association with lower respiratory tract infections in children. The invention provides an opportunity to develop diagnostic assays for detection of the virus in patients, novel vaccines and antiviral drugs.

A device for non invasive measurement of elasticity
This invention provides a non invasive method where small air pulses are blown on the vocal folds which cause a measurable tissue deformation that reflect the elasticity. The tissue deformation is measured with help of laser fibres. The measurements of vocal fold movements during in vivo testing have been done only by using local anaesthesia. The method can be a very useful tool in clinical situations for the diagnostics of vocal fold nodules, scars and stiffness before surgery but can also be used in other parts of larynx. The method is easily used and could be carried out without using general anaesthesia.

Cerebral Embolic Protection Device
Embolic particles may become dislodged by surgical or catheter manipulations and enter the bloodstream, moving into the cerebral vessels or downstream to other vital organs. Cerebral embolism can sometimes result in a clinical stroke, which is a feared complication of cardiac surgery and interventional cardiology and can often be the shortcoming of an otherwise uneventful and successful procedure.
Our invention is a collapsible embolic protection device devised for temporary transvascular delivery to an aortic arch of a patient. The product is intended for use during cardiovascular procedures/operations within the field of invasive cardiology or cardiac surgery, where protection against embolization of particles into the cerebral vessels is essential.

Pre-Analytical Method for a More Efficient and Time-Saving Bacterial Analysis
Antibiotic resistance is one of the most important public health threats, and is associated with increased mortality, morbidity and costs for healthcare systems. For clinicians, it is extremely important to get a rapid answer regarding the type of bacterial infection to be able to choose the right antibiotic treatment suitable for the specific patient or to be able to get enough information to make other decisions regarding patient care.
The present invention relates to a kit improving and facilitating biological sampling and handling before analysis. The kit comprises a collection vessel for receiving a sample, a growth medium and a specific enzyme being a central aspect of the invention. By facilitating bacterial selection and growth already during transportation from clinic to laboratory, it is, in an optimized setting, possible to provide the clinician with an answer regarding the bacterial type during the same day as the sample is taken.
